Homemade Cleaner for your Carpet Scrubber!

Sometimes carpets need a more thorough cleaning than a run of the mill vacuum cleaner is capable of providing.  For this, a steam cleaner is necessary.  A steam cleaner includes the suction performance of a vacuum with liquid cleaning solutions and heat, penetrating deep into the fibers of carpeting to pull out stains and nasty smells.  The issue is, in most cases the name brand products created for use with these steam cleaners are very pricey and cost drastically more than what most people can afford.  If you are in this boat, then this article is for you and will teach you how to make your own homemade carpet cleaner.

1)  Take your steam cleaning canister and fill with hot water.  Fill it close to 2 inches under the fill line on the canister.

2)  Pour 1 tbsp. of laundry detergent in to canister for every gallon of hot water you use.  This acts as an alternative to carpet shampoo and it will get down into the deep carpet fibers similar to how the laundry detergent cleans your clothing in the wash.

3)  Pour 1/4 cup of white vinegar into the cleaning canister if you’d like to add a disinfecting element to the solution.  This kills all bacteria and is safe for the carpet.

4)  Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to the water solution you have created.  This will freshen the carpet by deodorizing it.  In homes with pets and children this works great where items may have been soiled or spilled and will remove the nasty smell caused by such incidents.

5)  Now just use your steam cleaner as you would normally and enjoy your own homemade carpet cleaner!
